ENGL 3301 - Theories of Language and their Application to English I Credit Hours: 3 This course covers the linguistic subjects of syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics and pragmatics, which provide concepts and techniques for understanding languages, with special emphasis upon English. Topics will include descriptive versus prescriptive grammar, dialect and register, synchronic and diachronic language variation, the history of English, language acquisition, the leading theories of language, language theory and the art of composition. Required of all prospective teachers of English; to be taken before Clinical III.
