HIST 4450 - History of American Sexualities Credit Hours: 3 History of American Sexualities provides students with a comprehensive overview of how and why ideas related to sex and sexuality have evolved from the pre-colonial era in America up until the present. In exploring sexuality as a historically contingent sociocultural category of analysis, the course will focus on how ideas about sexuality have been historical linked to ideas about gender, biology, race, and class; how and why modern categories of “homosexuality” and “heterosexuality” came into existence; and, the impact of efforts to reform, regulate, or challenge societal perceptions of sexuality and sexual behavior.
Prerequisite(s): HIST 1107 or HIST 1108
