HIST 3340 - Popular Culture in Modern American History Credit Hours: 3 With the guiding premise that popular culture illuminates underlying tensions and currents of thought in American society, Popular Culture in Modern American History utilizes revealing examples of commercial entertainments, including film, television, music, radio, sports, comics, and literature in order to analyze key developments in modern American history. Viewing popular culture as a dialogical process between producers and consumers of entertainment, this course focuses on the interactions between marginal, subversive, and mainstream forms of popular culture in order to demonstrate how popular culture has been a democratic medium that has offered openings for cultural representation to marginalized groups in American history.
Prerequisite(s): HIST 1107 or HIST 1108
